On a sunny and clear cloudless day-time, the sky looks blue, although generally a lighter blue near the horizon, while the sun is a blinding yellowish white. The sky appears to be blue because of the way the atmosphere interacts with the sun's rays. White light, like the one emitted by the sun, is composed of many different colors of light, each with its own corresponding wavelength. When this light encounters matter, several effects can occur because it changes speed as it travels from one medium (air) to another (water).

The prisms break down the white light into its constituent colors. The blue color of the sky is due to a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering, which refers to the selective scattering of light by particles whose size is less than one-tenth the wavelength of light. It occurs most often when light travels through gasses (although it also happens with solids and clear liquids).

Rayleigh scattering depends mostly on the wavelength of light; Being the light with smaller wavelength the more dispersed. In the lower atmosphere, small molecules of oxygen and nitrogen disperse shortwave light, such as that corresponding to blue and violet light, to a much greater degree than longwave light, such as red and yellow. In fact, the dispersion of violet light (400 nanometers) is 9.4 times higher than red light scattering (700 nanometers).

While atmospheric particles scatter violet rather than blue light (450 nanometers), the sky looks blue because our eyes are more sensitive to blue light and because part of the violet light is absorbed into the upper atmosphere. 
During sunrise or sunset, sunlight must travel through more of the atmosphere to reach the eyes, so even bluer and violet light is scattered, allowing the reds and yellows to glimpse.
